I have been training here for almost 3 months. It's been such a great experience learning jiu jitsu from Professor Raz and all the coaches. This gym provides a friendly atmosphere and full with awesome people willing to help each other. Professor Raz’s approach to teaching is highly technical and practical. I can definitely see myself getting stronger physically and mentally in just 3 months of training. 100% recommended to anyone who is interested in learning Jiu Jitsu.
I had a great experience at this BJJ gym. Parking was easy, the space was clean, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Professor Raz has immense knowledge and is a fantastic instructor. I would recommend this gym to anyone interested in learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am 45 and just getting into this sport. This is a friendly environment for what might be considered an older athlete in this context.
Hands down the best martial arts I could have enrolled my kid in. Here he learns so much more than the sport itself. We have been attending this gym for over 2 years. Through the pandemic they offered online classes at a discounted rate for the kids. My kid has learned respect , antibullying and self defense. Here we are part of a family . The professors are amazing with the kids. All of them. Highly recommend this location .
I recently joined Gracie Barra New West and it's been a great experience so far. Everyone here is very friendly and patient especially with beginners like myself. Professor Raz is very helpful and made the whole process of starting Jui Jitsu very easy. I would definitely recommend this gym to anyone thinking about joining.
Best jujitsu gym I’ve ever been to, everyone is so nice and has absolutely zero ego. Super friendly environment but be ready for the workout of your life the competition is sky high and the skill level of everyone at the gym is through the roof lots of top tournament guys at the gym all the time but don’t worry everyone teaches everyone. Professor raz and professor don are awesome. Really great to learn from two legends of the sport and have a laugh with aswell
Family oriented training in a fun and safe environment. Coaches are always available to help students get better. Students are also keen to help each other out. We succeed together. Being in my 40s, I wasn't sure if I would be able to keep up. GB New Westminster has shown me not only can I keep up, but I can also hold my own. Some days it's hard on my body, but nothing worth doing is ever easy, and this is worth doing for anyone at any age.

Professor Raz is one of the best martial artists that come out of Vancouver, BC. He has such deep knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is able to communicate those moves to all ages and skill level. I highly recommend Professor Raz and GB New Westminister. My whole family takes his classes/program and we’ve learned so much from our fitness/health to the mental part of the game.
Professor Raz is one of the most knowledgeable and technical instructors I've ever had the pleasure to learn from. Highly recommended!
Professor Raz is one of the best instructors out there. He has elite level talent developed over many years and has a passion for training lower level students. You can be sure you’re learning excellent, and practical, technique with Prof Raz.
Great place to learn and practice BJJ. Professor Raz is one of the best and always goes into tiny details when explaining a technique. Clean facilities and friendly students.
This place is not just a school, but a great community for you to learn and experiment with Jiu-Jitsu. On top of that you have a very attentive teacher, Raz, who is invested in your progress and helping you develop your own style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Professor Raz has been with me since day 1 of my Jiu Jitsu journey, through injuries, weird questions, and competitions. He is dedicated to his students and will always be there to help those who want it. He emulates the hard work and focus that he expects in his students, and cultivates a culture of kindness and respect. A fantastic coach and attentive professor, he makes BJJ accessible and understandable for the newest white belts, and comprehensive and continually challenging for all the levels up. He focuses on the concepts and reasons behind and for each movement. This is crucial as it empowers students to cultivate their own personal style of BJJ that fits with their body type and who they are, while always remaining technically flawless. He is all about Jiu Jitsu as a life long endeavour and art form, rather than a quick fix exercise routine. It's been an inspiring year of training under him, and I know I will be learning techniques and skills from Professor Raz for life.

My son Ayden has recently joined Gracie Barra and is loving the program. He comes home from each class and explains what he has learned each day.
The instructors are very respectful and encouraging. Their patience and calm guidance have made my son relaxed and ready to learn.
Recently they have sent each student home with a pink bracelet representing their anti bullying program. Each student was given 5 bracelets to give out to his friends. Ayden did this immediately the next morning and some of his friends have been wearing them ever since. The message on it is “Be a buddy not a bully” which I think resonates with us all.
Thank you Raz, Walt and Jason for making my sons introduction to your program a positive and enriching experience. We are looking forward to long relationship.
Welcome to the community.

How to Use Verbal Jiu-Jitsu to Resolve Conflict at Work
November 15, 2022
If you’re like most people, you probably dread conflict. But conflict is a natural part of life—and that includes conflict at work. The good news is that there are some tried-and-true techniques you can use to resolve conflict in a positive, productive way. One of those techniques is verbal jiu-jitsu.
Verbal jiu-jitsu is all about using words to defuse a situation and take the wind out of someone’s sails. It’s a way of diffusing tension and preventing an argument from escalating. And it’s something you can use the next time you’re in a conflict at work. Here are five ways to do it:
1. Acknowledge the other person’s feelings.
The first step in using verbal jiu-jitsu is to acknowledge the other person’s feelings. This shows them that you understand where they’re coming from and that you’re open to hearing them out. For example, you might say something like, “I can see that you’re angry, frustrated, upset etc.”
2. Reflect back what the other person has said.
Once you’ve acknowledged the other person’s feelings, the next step is to reflect back what they’ve said. This helps to defuse the situation and gives the other person the chance to clarify their position. For example, you might say something like, “So, if I’m understanding correctly, what you’re saying is X.”
3. Ask questions.
Asking questions is a great way to diffuse tension and keep a conversation from spiraling out of control. Questions also help to ensure that you understand where the other person is coming from and what they want. For example, you might say something like, “Can you help me understand why X is important to you?” or “What would be your ideal outcome in this situation?”
4. Make statements rather than accusations.
When we’re in the heat of the moment, it’s easy to let our emotions get the better of us and start making accusations rather than statements . But when we make an accusation, it puts the other person on the defensive and makes them less likely to listen to us. For example, rather than saying “You never listen to me!” try something like “I feel like I’m not being heard.”
5. Seek common ground.
Finding common ground is a great way to reduce tension and build rapport with the other person . When we can find things that we agree on, it helps create a sense of teamwork and cooperation—even if we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything else . For example, you might say something like , “I know we don’t agree on X , but one thing we can both agree on is Y .”
Conflict is inevitable—but that doesn’t mean it has to be bad! By using verbal jiu-jitsu, you can diffuser potentially explosive situations and prevent them from escalating into full-blown arguments . The next time you’re in conflict at work , try out these five techniques and see how they help!
